Back-to-School Events Get DC Students Ready for New Academic Year

Back-to-school events took center stage at Skyland Town Center and THEARC in August, helping DC students get ready for the new academic year.

A big shout out goes to the DC Metropolitan Police Department’s 6th District for sponsoring a back-to-school backpack giveaway and fair at Skyland Town Center. Thanks also go out to the Skyland tenants, including Skyland Workforce Center, PNC, Trek Bicycle, Jersey Mike’s Subs and Community Educational ResearchGroup, for participating in the fun. WC Smith is the residential developer behind Skyland, the largest town center in SE DC.

Thanks also go out to Chase Bank, which, with former NFL player and actor Vernon Davis held its 2nd annual Back-to-School Community Day at Skyland. DC Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, Wanda Durant (mother of NBA star Kevin Durant) and WUSA9 anchor Wisdom Martin were on hand to take part in the celebration.

Wrapping up the festivities was the Good Times Community fair, sponsored by WC Smith’s nonprofit partner Building Bridges Across the River.

More than 1,200 people turned up at THEARC Aug. 25 for the annual event, which featured backpacks and supplies for students, food and entertainment. The Craig Shields Foundation provided free haircuts and styling for children.

Several of the THEARC’s nonprofit partners, including the David Lynch Transcendental Meditation Center, Phillips Collection, Bishop Walker School for Boys and the Washington School for Girls had tables and activities. WPGC supplied the music, while the DC chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighters served up food from its Old Fireman BBQ food truck.
