Howard University Figure Skating and Canal Park Ice Rink in the News

The Canal Park Ice Rink, in DC’s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, played host to several national media stories about the Howard University Figure Skating team, the first of its kind at an Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

The stories, which included pieces by CBS Morning News, Good Morning America and NPR, profiled the team’s founders, challenges and progress as it prepared for its first intercollegiate competition, held at the University of Delaware Feb. 24-25.

Much of them footage showed two of the team’s founders, Maya James and Cheyenne Parker, skating at the Canal Park Ice Rink.

At the tournament, Maya James finished 5th out of 11 competitors in her event, the Juvenile Women Short Program.

WC Smith built Canal Park, a 3-acre open space in Capitol Riverfront that is adjacent to our corporate headquarters. Opened in 2012, the park features seasonal events, public art, restaurants, dancing water fountains in the warmer months and the ice rink in the colder months. The Friends of Ft. Dupont Ice Arena operate the rink.
