Turkey Giveaways for Thanksgiving

WC Smith properties and our partner nonprofit organization Building Bridges Across the River were hosts for large turkey and side dish giveaways this year in an effort to ensure that community members had the items they need for their Thanksgiving meals.

Bread for the City provided 200 turkeys for the residents of Fairway Park and sister properties.

One Fairway Park resident wrote in to express her appreciation:

I’m writing to thank you for today’s Thanksgiving Turkey giveaway.

This is the first time in the eleven plus years I have lived here that you have done this. For many, it could not have been better timing due to both the recent government shutdown and the fact that many nonprofits have had their funding cut resulting in their not being able to assist, as they have in the past.

Again, I thank you for your generosity.

Building Bridges held its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway on Friday, Nov. 21 at THEARC.

A large group of volunteers, including several WC Smith employees and family members, distributed 1,355 turkey bags that day, which, according to data collected on site, reached nearly 6,200 people. Most of the recipients live east of the Anacostia River, and a majority are eligible to receive SNAP or WIC benefits.

This event received support from Capital One, Novo Nordisk and Giant Food.

Building Bridges also partnered with Washington View to distribute nearly 150 turkeys to residents on Nov. 20.
